Having some quality time off gets you thinking… I was getting quite disheartened with some recent situations and asking why some clients were putting me in a difficult situation, pushing me to keep lowering my rates. It didn’t matter how much I tried to explain to them that I am a professional, running a business and have costs too. I take pride in what I do and give a quality end result. I am not a monkey and I certainly don’t work for peanuts! Saying that I also have so many wonderful lovely clients who understand the business and realise that I too have outgoings and have spent a lot of money on my equipment and studio to provide a top quality service. I, along with many other Actors, have spent years training and continue to do so through their career, in order to keep at the top of their game and be good at what they do.
Today we are all struggling with the economic climate and looking for a bargain, but how many times have you bought a fake or cheaper version of something and it ending up breaking or getting worn out in little to no time? I have and will openly admit. It does make me think twice now though, as in the long run you end up spending more money, never really satisfied and feel like you are settling for second best. It’s the same for voiceovers. You have to value what you do, respect yourself as an Artist and not do it because you want to make a quick buck.
Take Pride in what you do and Know your worth!
I was reading Paul Strikwerda’s post on The Power of Pricing and he had a great story, so thank you Paul for sharing. So it’s worth reading the whole article.
