The Voiceover Mic Shoot Out…

Back in December I was kindly asked to do session to test a series of microphones suitable for Voiceover Artists with the fabulous Mike Aiton and James Ivey for review on Pro Tools Expert.

It was great fun doing it. Andrew Bickenell and myself recorded a snippet of dialogue with every microphone across the afternoon and then Mike and James put these microphones to the test by adding them to the Pro Tools Expert site over a series of posts, without stating the name of the microphone, and allowing people to listen and then select their favourite. The Neumann U87 was used as a benchmark microphone, as this is probably the most widely used microphone for voiceover recordings in most studios.

Although I have had the pleasure recording in numerous recording studios voicing with many different microphones, there were several I hadn’t tried and consequently it was very enlightening!

Having that many microphones around me was very exciting-  I was like a child in a sweetshop, or for across the pond- a kid in a candy store! I certainly wanted to take a few of them home, but sadly no freebies for me!

So which were my favourites?…Now that would be telling!
